Where to Shop in Marrakech: Choosing Sources You Can Understand

When you arrive in Marrakech, many pieces can look similar. You may already have a recommendation from a friend, a driver or an article. The difficult part is knowing whether that recommendation suits what you want to buy.

My starting point is the source. I work with suppliers I have known for years, whose workshops I have visited and whose sourcing I understand. That gives us a practical starting point for discussing the goods.

Begin with your interests

A useful shopping visit starts with an enquiry. Tell us whether you are looking for a rug, ceramics, textiles, lighting, leather or something else. Bring references, dimensions and a budget if you have them.

If you do not know exactly what you want, say so. We can begin with an overview and compare different types of pieces. You do not need to arrive as a product expert.

Ordinary private sessions usually take three to four hours, with a maximum of four hours for that format. Professional sourcing can need a full day or several days and is quoted separately.

Understand the work before choosing the shop

For a carpet-focused visit, we may begin with the wool market to discuss the materials and dyeing before reviewing rugs with suppliers. For ceramics, origin, workmanship and intended use become part of the conversation.

The route follows the brief. There is no single list of stops that serves every buyer equally well.

Explore the product categories we source, then share the ones that interest you most.

Why our supplier list is private

Our established supplier relationships are part of the service clients pay for. We do not publish supplier names, addresses or private visit routes.

That confidentiality does not mean buying without information. During the service, we discuss the relevant supplier and the particular goods so that you can make an informed decision. Professional buyers can communicate directly with suppliers as part of their sourcing work.

Our preference for local sources

We usually shop in the souks, with artisans and locally owned suppliers. We do not use Sidi Ghanem for our shopping visits. This describes how we work; it is not a claim about every business in another area.

What matters to me is understanding the source and the work, rather than choosing a place because it has a persuasive sales story. Questions about quality and price should be welcome.

Plan for the purchase as well as the visit

Think about how the piece will be used and how it will get home. A rug needs to suit your room. Ceramics need a packing plan. Spices need clear pricing and product information, and destination import rules need checking.
