Buying Moroccan Ceramics: Source, Craftsmanship and Packing

Blue, white and green ceramic vases displayed outdoors

A ceramic bowl may be the first Moroccan piece someone remembers seeing in a friend's home. Once you start shopping, the choice can quickly become overwhelming: similar colours and patterns, different prices, and different explanations of where the work comes from.

For me, the first check is the source. I know suppliers in Safi and Fes, and I want to understand where a piece came from before recommending it.

Ask about the actual piece

Ask where it was made, what the supplier knows about the workshop, and how the item was produced and decorated. A broad description such as “Moroccan pottery” is a starting point, not the full answer.

Look at the finish and craftsmanship of the piece you will receive. For a set, review the individual items as well as the overall pattern. If variations matter to your project, discuss them before confirming the order.

A familiar source helps us ask better questions. It does not remove the need to check the particular selection.

Explain how you intend to use it

Buying a decorative vase and buying plates for serving food are different briefs. Tell us whether you need display pieces, tableware or a coordinated collection.

Do not assume a piece is suitable for food, heat or a dishwasher because it looks like another item you have used. Ask for product information supporting the intended use. Appearance, place of origin and a handmade description are not proof of food safety.

For professional projects, include any suitability or documentation requirements in the brief before the search starts.

Check dimensions and quantities

Photographs alone can make scale difficult to judge. Confirm measurements, the number of pieces and whether you need matching or deliberately varied items.

For remote selection, we share photographs and can arrange video calls. Use that conversation to ask about details and agree which actual pieces form the order.

For custom requests, feasibility, finish, quantities and production timing need the maker's confirmation. A reference image is not a promise of an identical available product.

Include packing in the decision

Ceramics are fragile, so shipping should be discussed before payment. Protective wooden crates may be appropriate, with the packing method and cost agreed for the order.

Ask who will pack the pieces, how the contents will be recorded and what shipping coverage applies. Protective packing reduces exposure to handling damage, but it is not a guarantee that damage cannot occur.

The supplier arranges shipment, and Marrakech Shopping coordinates and follows up locally. Read our shipping guide for the details to confirm.

Buying for a collection or business

Professional buyers may need more time to compare and select. Visits can include workshops and factories in Fes when that fits the project, with a separate itinerary and quote.

We keep private supplier names and addresses out of public guides. During the service, the focus is on understanding the relevant source and making the right selection for your brief.
